2006 General Information

Project background –

The Lincoln Park Community Art Initiative is a community public art competition that seeks to further enrich the community by bringing art into Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood while supporting the city's professional artists. Eight to ten professional 3-D artists will be invited to create and install sculptures at identified public sites throughout the area. The fifth annual program will award a $1,500 honorarium to each selected artist. Sculptures will remain on display from late-April 2006 through April 2007. During that time, a tour map will be created, distributed and available to the public.

Lincoln Park Community Art Initiative is a partnership with 43rd Ward Alderman Vi Daley and the City of Chicago, Department of Cultural Affairs, Public Art Program. Lead sponsors include General Iron, A. Finkl & Sons and the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce.

Eligibility –

Lincoln Park Community Art Initiative is open to all experienced professional sculptors who reside in Cook, Will, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry, Kendall or Grundy County. Artists must be experienced with the design, construction and installation of large-scale outdoor sculpture and must have a documented track-record of this experience. Only strong consideration will be given to professional sculptors whose work has been or is currently on display in a public setting.

Installation Sites –

Each piece will be assigned to an appropriate installation site by members of the jury based on size , shape and appropriateness. Sites are scattered throughout Chicago’s 43rd Ward which extends from Diversey Parkway in the north to Division Street on the south, and the Chicago River east to Lake Michigan.

Jury Process –

Jurors will review entries in February of 2006. The works selected will then be presented to the City of Chicago, Department of Cultural Affairs, Public Art Committee for approval. All artists who have been named to participate will be contacted by phone. All other entries will be returned by mail.

To be considered for Lincoln Park Community Art Initiative 2006, artists must submit:

Artists will be notified by mail to confirm receipt of their entry. Entries must be received no later than February 10, 2006. Be sure to make a photocopy of all entry materials for your records in the event that your application is lost in the mail. There is no entry fee.
