Eight public sculptures are taking over the streets of the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The Lincoln Park Community Art Initiative 2002 sculpture exhibit the first of its kind was developed by Alderman Daley to bring public art to the streets of the Lincoln Park community. Eight professional Chicagoland sculptors were chosen following an intensive jury process. Residents, area associations and businesses are sponsors of this initiative. The City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District are partners with LPCAI in this inaugural installation.
The inaugural exhibit consists of the following sculptures:
"Inland Sea Fowl" by Evan Lewis at approximately 1817 North Clark Street,
"Everyones Everest" by Barry Hehemann at 2201 North Cannon Drive,
"Bear" by John Kearney at 2400 North Halsted,
"Celestial Voyage" by Mike Helbing at 1449 North Wells,
"Hairdo" by Bobby Joe Scribner at 800 West Belden,
"Quantaloop" by Nicole Beck at 1879 North Sheffield,
"Double Modius Strip" by Plamen Yordanov at 1859 North Sedgwick and
"Winged Victory Construction" by Bill Boyce at 2020 North Orchard.
Current sponsors include General Iron, A. Finkl & Sons, Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce, Wrightwood Neighbors Conservation Association, Lincoln Park Conservation Association, Old Town Merchants and Residents Association and Alderman Vi Daley.
The competition was open to artists from Chicago, Cook and the collar counties. A call for artists was issued and almost 30 artists submitted proposals. The artists were selected by a jury of sponsors and art professionals who live or work in the Lincoln Park area. Artists chosen to display were awarded a $1,000 grant. Alderman Daley thanked the artists by noting that this "is our inaugural year and I am very excited that artists of your caliber were willing to submit proposals."
The installations were completed on Sunday, April 21, 2002. These sculptures will remain on display until October of 2002. The jury for next years display will be meeting to judge submissions for the 2003 installation as this years display is being disassembled.
