Historic Landmark Preservation

Ald. Daley is a member of the City Council Committee on Landmarks and Historic Preservation.  She has sponsored 16 Chicago Landmark Designations including saving the Burling Row Houses from a proposed demolition.  With her guidance the City Council adopted the Near North Preservation District that implemented zoning standards to protect the historic Gold Coast area of the 43rd Ward.  Ald. Daley is also leading an effort with the Gold Coast Neighbors Assn. to preserve the wood block alley between Astor and State Pky behind the Cardinal's residence.  This alley has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ald. Daley helps property owners with improvement projects and redevelopment proposals in landmark districts.  The link to the Commission on Chicago Landmarks provides information about Chicago Landmarks, guidelines for construction with landmark properties, and access to the Chicago Historic Resources Survey.  The Chicago Historic Resources Survey, a color-coded classification survey of  buildings in Chicago, is an important resource for researching properties.

Contact the Landmarks staff in the City's Department of Planning at 312-744-3200 or the alderman's office if you have specific questions about landmark properties.
